Christmas and New Year in Ischia: where to go and what to do

End-of-year festivities make the island of Ischia completely different from the summer, but no less fascinating. There are many things to do and see in the winter period: in this guide, we have selected a few that you should not miss!

Religious traditions

One of the main places to visit to get into Ischia’s Christmas spirit is the borgo di Ischia Ponte which, from the beginning of December, hosts many cribs in its historic buildings. The nativity scene is a deeply felt tradition in Ischia, handed down from generation to generation.

Some of the most popular Christmas attractions in Ischia come from the Catholic tradition: in addition to the art of nativity scenes, one of the most eagerly awaited Christmas events is the living nativity scene of Campagnano. The entire village of Campagnano becomes the theatre for the nativity scene, where shepherds are played by the very inhabitants of the village.

Another religious tradition taking place on Epiphany is the representation of the arrival of the Magi. In Ischia, the Three Magi come from the sea and reach the Siaggia dei Pescatori at Mandra by boat. Children wait for them to receive sweets and candy as gifts.

Fish market and markets

An unmissable Christmas event in Ischia is the traditional fish market held every year in Forio on the night between 23 and 24 December. This market offers not only excellent fish, but also a wonderful festive atmosphere, to which people from Ischia are particularly fond.

Another feature of Christmas season in Ischia are the traditional Christmas markets. Here, the smell of roasted chestnuts mingles with the scent of the sea, while kiosks and stalls display fine objects created by artisans. Characteristic Christmas markets can be found in all the main towns on the island.

Lights and bagpipes

Luminarie are another distinctive Christmas feature in Ischia. At this time of year, in each of the island’s six municipalities, streets, squares and alleyways of the centre are all lit and enriched with beautiful decorations, creating a joyful festive atmosphere.

Under the lights, it is also easy to meet pipe players. At Christmas, pipers give Ischia’s towns and cities festive performances of novene, playing from house to house. This is a very ancient tradition, very important for the Christmas spirit of Ischia.

Music and New Year’s Eve

Other music-themed events are those involving the island’s polyphonic choruses. At Christmas, several concerts are organised. Popular and more recent songs accompany each other, creating a special event that is enjoyed by adults and children alike.

As for New Year’s Eve in Ischia, it is mainly celebrated mainly in the island’s biggest squares. Here, on New Year’s Eve, tourists and islanders go wild, dancing and toasting until New Year’s dawn.
